Brookwood Families, The safety and health of our students and our communities are very important to us.

March 16th and 17th will be teacher ONLY days. This will allow our staff time to prepare for the upcoming days where instruction will be set off-site for our students. There will be set times where students/parents can come onsite to pick up devices and supplies from their classrooms that have been left behind. Our K-3 students will also be given their devices to bring home for the period of time when our school is closed. Information in regards to the device/supply pick up will be sent out over the weekend. We will work with our families to ensure that our students have what they need to keep learning when they are not in school.

Specifics about learning activities will be shared during device/supply pick up times and through our Brookwood App and social media during our teacher days.

If you have other questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact Kellie Bohn directly at kellie.bohn@gcj2.k12.wi.us or 262-374-1949.

Students at the elementary school spent the week of January 27th celebrating Brookwood Kindness Week. During this week students were involved in a variety of cross curriculum kindness activities, dress up days and service projects. In addition, students who showed acts of kindness received kindness slips that are displayed on our kindness board. This week was the kick off to February, kindness month! During the month of February we are running a Mac Attack (mac and cheese) drive to benefit the Walworth County Pantry. Students are learning about childhood hunger and are so excited about donating mac and cheese to help other children. Also this month students will participate in classroom kindness challenges and continue to earn kindness slips. Outside of school, students are working on their kindness calendar that can be turned in once 20+ acts of kindness have been achieved. #BrookwoodsBest

This year during Brookwood Kindness Week, our 2nd grade students partnered with the Walworth County Food Pantry in putting together the 150 SAM (Senior Assistance Mission) bags to help the seniors living in poverty in Walworth County. The bags include health and safety needs of a senior. 2nd grade students were taught about what a senior citizen is and why their needs are unique. Students also talked about how our the elderly often are faced with loneliness. 2nd and 3rd grade students worked hard to create 150 Valentines Day cards to be placed in each SAM bag. The students learned a lot about putting themselves in the shoes of a senior citizen and said they felt so good when they would complete each bag, knowing it was helping a senior in their community. #BrookwoodsBest

Mr. Siegel loves being able to share his enthusiasm of learning with his students and one resource he uses often with his students are audiobooks. Audiobooks offer a wide array of benefits! Not only is it a great way for students to access various genres of literature but this resource also allows students to enjoy books that are above their own reading levels that may be difficult for them to read in a traditional read to self setting. He likes using audiobooks with students to teach critical listening skills, model interpretive reading, and to introduce new genres to students that students might not otherwise consider. Check out some audiobooks for yourself. Many are available for check out from the Genoa City Library www.genoacity.lib.wi.us and there are other free resources online. https://bookriot.com/2016/09/15/11-websites-find-free-audiobooks-online/ Enjoy listening! #BrookwoodsBest

Desert and Rainforests are some pretty cool terrestrial environments! At least that is what the 4th and 5th graders in Mrs. Erickson's science class think. First graders in Mrs. Hanson’s class have been working hard writing nonfiction teaching books. Students selected topics they knew a lot about and wrote a lot of pages to teach others about their topic. As students wrapped up their first teaching books, they had the opportunity to present their books on Seesaw. Students recorded themselves reading their books and published their work on Seesaw to share with their classmates and families. #BrookwoodsBest

Students in seventh grade use a learning platform called Edmodo to make posts about literature circle novels they read. Students are able to post connections, questions, and comments to the group while reading nightly. They are also able to reply to other posts in order to answer questions and build off of the group's comments. The students are essentially able to manage and run a book club through communication within Edmodo while supporting one another in and out of the classroom with the teacher being zoned into what they are doing and discussing. #BrookwoodsBest

Last week, a student in Mrs. Arshem's third grade class came to school asking if they could do something for the families affected by the apartment fires. After a class discussion, their classroom decided to collect donations for those families. Word spread and some other students pitched in too. In just four days, they collected 143 food items, a crockpot, gift card, diapers, and more! The students were able to walk to UCC to hand deliver all of their donations. It all started with one student's idea and turned into an amazing act of kindness! #BrookwoodsBest

Did you know: “Researchers say about 60 percent of us make New Year's resolutions but only about 8 percent are successful in achieving them.” (Economy, 2019) Instead of setting a New Year’s resolution this year….set an achievable goal with your child and help them feel the joy of completing a task over time and learning goal setting from home. Examples: If your child doesn’t ever set the bed in the morning….don’t have them set a goal of setting their bed every morning…set an achievable goal of for the month of January that they will set their bed at least twice a week and keep track of it…if it goes well….in February, change it to three times a week…and celebrate the accomplishment. If trying or eating healthy foods is a task in your home….set a goal that each week that your family will try at least two new vegetables or fruits with dinner each week. Track your successes and celebrate the accomplishment! If your child is struggling with academics at school…..pick one subject area where they will stay after school once a week to get additional support. At the middle school, our teachers have after school academic support sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. If your child is at the elementary school, feel free to reach out the their teacher to see what kind of plan you can work on together to have your child be more successful. Overtime, your child will see that taking the extra time to get academic support will help them feel accomplishment in their classes. If spreading kindness is something you value….have your child value it as well….brainstorm some ideas that show acts of kindness that they can accomplish. Put all your ideas in a jar and once a week pull a slip or two out and do it! There are so many things you can do to help your child feel success and it all starts at home….don’t pick a New Year’s resolution this year….work with your child on setting achievable goals so they feel accomplishment and success! HELP share some ideas in the comments below on some achievable goals that can be accomplished from home!!! https://www.inc.com/peter-economy/10-top-new-years-resolutions-for-success-happiness-in-2019.html #BrookwoodsBest

BROOKWOOD FOR THE WINNNNNN!!! Last night, the Brookwood girls basketball team beat a conference powerhouse, Yorkville, 21 to 20 in the first round of the playoffs. Our girls will now be advancing to the final four of the playoffs. The Brookwood defense held Yorkville to 4 points in the 1st half! The scoring was spread out amongst the girls in a tremendous team effort. Taylor Palazzo made a 3 pointer to get the team started, and Tessa Coari beat the buzzer at the end of the first half with a basket. Lilly Villareal and Natalie Porras led the charge with aggressive defense and offense. Lilly Butinas sealed the victory by making a free throw with seconds remaining in the game. Congrats to ALL our girls on on huge playoff victory! We hope to see you at Yorkville on 12/3 for our next game to determine who heads to the championship game on 12/5! #BrookwoodsBest

The past few weeks, 7th grade scientists have been learning about the properties of water. We learned water particles are attracted to one another and resist being separated. We dropped water on pennies, trying to determine how many drops would stack up on a penny. How many drops of water to you think can stay on a penny? The students are also learning about chemical formulas, and that each substance can be made of different types of atoms in different arrangements. We used marshmallows and toothpicks to build molecules of water, carbon dioxide, fructose (sugar), and caffeine - all ingredients found in soda. We were able to separate the water from the soda, using a process called distillation. The scientific principles of evaporation and condensation were used to explain how the water was removed from the soda. 7th grade science is awesome! #BrookwoodsBest

Later in the unit, students will learn how to speak and write the Ojibwa language and hear the story, “We are Grateful” by Traci Sorell and Frane Lessac which is a cultural Native American book teaching us how to express gratitude. #BrookwoodsBest

Students in Mrs. Goggin's second grade class have been geologists in science. After studying types earth materials in the last investigation students learned how earth materials are used this week. The second graders became engineers to investigate how to best mix sand and matrix (a cornstarch and water mixture that acts like a glue) to make a permanent sand sculpture. They then used the properties of clay to design a bead. Those beads were painted and turned into a necklace or bracelet for them to keep. The students had fun learning how earth materials are used in construction materials such as bricks, asphalt and concrete! #BrookwoodsBest

In the BMS Art Appreciation class with Ms. Nousaine, students learn about art from around the world. They are currently studying the art of Japan. Students are learning about the famous Japanese painting, The Great Wave. Did you know this painting is the inspiration for the wave emoji? Students learned about the artist Hokusai and his famous woodblock print that is known around the world. Students then had their choice of medium to create their own interpretation of The Great Wave. Students chose clay, paint, marker, pen, and paper scraps. Way to work hard, Mustangs! #BrookwoodsBest

2nd and 3rd grade students have been working hard at their fitness testing the past few weeks in P.E. class. Students were given an assignment on Seesaw to reflect on their personal fitness scores and to come up with a personal goal for the year that they can work on outside of school. They will be revisiting this goal in the winter and spring. Students are familiar with uploading pictures and videos for different skills but this is the first time that they had to write using this program in P.E.. #BrookwoodsBest *More pictures on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/GenoaCitySchools/

Recently, Mr. Guth accepted a check for $1,000 from Walmart Lake Geneva. Wellness is one of three key areas of focus for our district and we are looking forward to being able to use this grant money to enhance our student wellness programming! We are looking specifically at ways to add equipment to supplement recess options and to bring new opportunities for physical activity to our FREE Family Fun Night in January. This winter, we will be offering regular Family Open Gym time in January and February. During this time, our community will have access to both our Middle School Gym and our Fitness Center. We also offer year round Zumba and Yoga classes by certified instructors. We appreciate Lake Geneva Walmart's support in helping our students and their families stay active and well! #BrookwoodsBest

Students in Mrs. Conrardy’s 4K class were engaged in four different focus areas during centers this week! The four centers included pumpkin investigation, building, and two dramatic play areas (kitchen and ice cream truck)! In the pumpkin investigation, students made observations while picking out seeds (using our fine motor skills) and playing in the pumpkin pulp. They learned about the different parts of a pumpkin (seeds, pulp, rind, and stem) and discussed how using our five senses is important during an investigation. In the other three centers, students engaged in social interaction. It is during this time that students learn to problem solve and resolve conflict all while pretending to cook or set a table and also build a structure while work at the ice cream truck. Students demonstrate understanding of rules during this time as well. Students work on taking turns, sharing and working together. These activities help to build a classroom community. #BrookwoodsBest

Last spring, both Brookwood Schools received the official designation as “ALICE certified” schools. This certification came a little over a year after the first staff training in the district and about two years after the initial conversations with Chief Balog, who is a certified ALICE trainer. This fall, the district will continue their implementation by providing classroom training to all students in grades K-8, as well as offering an evening training session for parents. ALICE is an acronym for: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. The ALICE approach to school safety centers around providing preparation for schools on how to proactively handle the threat of an active shooter situation, unlike the traditional “lockdown only” approach. While the information shared via ALICE training is consistently focused on awareness and options, presentations to students vary dependent on age. In addition to ALICE, our school district has upgraded both camera systems, changed door security hardware and processes, installed exterior window markers and interior window blinds, and purchased BleedStop kits for all district classrooms and main areas. Many of these changes have been done as a part of a Safety Grant that the district acquired through the Office of School Safety and Department of Public Instruction. We are SO LUCKY as a district to have a strong partnership with our local police department! School Administrators meet regularly with Chief Balog and members of his department who provide advice on facility safety, assist with training for staff and students, and who are always willing to be involved in daily school activities. #BrookwoodsBest

Our 1st through 3rd grade art students worked on a collaborative project inspired by quilter Corrine Sovey. Corrine is a quilter from Texas who is known for her vibrant colors and geometric shapes in her quilts. Every art student made a square for the "Community Quilt" using brightly colored triangles, rectangles, squares and 1/4 circles. Way to go, Mustangs! #BrookwoodsBest

For the past four years, Jennifer Mosansky, who is one of our 6th grade regular and special education teachers, has been our Community Zumba Instructor. Not only does she offer community classes for all ages but she has also offered various classes for our staff as well. Her love of Zumba began when she decided to offer a Zumba class for our summer school academy students. When she saw the excitement and fun the students were having —— she knew it was something that she wanted to pursue further. From there, Mosansky attended a training class in Milwaukee to become a licensed instructor! What Mosansky loves most about Zumba is that it really is for everybody! It doesn't matter if you feel like you are a "dancer" or not, or if you feel like you have no rhythm- Zumba is for YOU! As long as you are moving your body and having fun, you are doing it right! The music is so upbeat and engaging that you really can't help but move to it! She knows a lot of people feel intimidated when they see the class for the first time, but once they do it 2 or 3 times…they get over that feeling of intimidation very quickly and realize they are there to just have fun! Mosansky loves being a part of a plethora of events for our District but Zumba is one that is at the top of her list. She wants to allow everyone a chance to try it out — so she’s offering to all new participants to trial it by offering their first class FREE of charge with the mention of any of our social media posts! So you’ve got nothing to lose!! Come out to a Zumba class now!! The next class is September 5th at 6 pm at the middle school. Molly Amelse has been teaching yoga at Brookwood for the past three years after completing the Breathe For Change Teaching Program. This 200-hour training program, in New York, allowed her to become a certified adult and child yoga instructor. Along with this training, she also learned how to facilitate social emotional learning to better help students connect with the many emotions they feel throughout the day. Her journey towards yoga began when she realized how difficult it was for students to effectively process through their emotions throughout the school day. Her initial desire to get her yoga certification arose from wanting to give students additional tools to help keep(omit) them be happy and healthy. Amelse has taught a wide range of various types of yoga classes at Brookwood from the Little Yogi classes to monthly adult classes. She ensures that her student yoga classes are filled with games, short yoga flows, team building activities, songs, and social emotional read aloud books. The main goal of her student yoga classes is to expose students to different types of coping tools they can use when experiencing a wide range of emotions and of course to have fun! While Amelse’s adult yoga classes allow participants to complete a vinyasa yoga flow which allows them to connect their breathing and movement into one flow. She starts each class by setting up a group intention that allows yogis to settle into their space and calm their mind. Amelse thinks it is really important for everyone to find time to practice self-care and she believes attending yoga classes is a great first step. Wellness... If children are not well, they cannot learn. In the Genoa City School District, we incorporate wellness practices and education into our classrooms in order to provide our students with strategies to address physical, social and emotional learning. To encourage our students to be physically active, we have morning activity programs before the school day in both buildings, in addition to regular physical education classes, and classroom brain breaks that get the students up and moving. In addition to our extra-curricular athletic programs in the Middle School, we offer opportunities for kids to be active in after-school classes in both buildings. In the last two years, we have added a Fitness Center at the Middle School and a Rock Wall at the Elementary School to provide students with new and interesting fitness opportunities that can be carried into adulthood. We also encourage our families to be active together by offering Family Yoga, Open Gym Time, Family Bike Rides, and an annual fun run--just to name a few! Our Elementary School also participates in Jump Rope for Heart/Heart Healthy Heros, which reinforces the importance of all aspects of wellness for younger students. As a small town school district, creating a strong culture of community has always been one of our core values. Helping students develop a strong sense of self while developing healthy social relationships is incorporated into daily classroom work. Regular Social and Emotional Learning classes are incorporated into the schedule at each grade level and we have a full time counselor in each of our school buildings. We have conducted staff training to continue to learn more about helping students to self-regulate. Our District was excited to receive a Mental Health Grant for the 2019-2020 School Year. This grant will enable us to further develop supports and screening tools for all of our students to support their social and emotional health. We are also partnering with the Professional Services Group (PSG), to provide school-based counseling and staff and parent training. For our staff, we offer physical fitness classes and fitness room access. We incorporate physical activity into Professional Development Training and encourage practices that support a balance between home and work. Each year, individual staff members have the opportunity to participate in a variety of wellness contests and initiatives to strengthen their individual healthy habits. #BrookwoodsBest

Brookwood Elementary School has seen many changes over the years. Genoa City School was established in the 1800’s and the original school house burnt down on November 18, 1907. The School was rebuilt 1908 and educated students in grade k-12. The name was changed to Genoa City Public School in 1924, when the town name was changed from Genoa Junction to Genoa City. Our School remained Genoa City Public School until the fall of 1958. It was then that Badger High School was built in Lake Geneva and our 9-12 grade students began attend school there. At this point Genoa City Public School once again when through a change. During the 1958-1959 school year, now a K-8 school building, was renamed Brookwood School. In 1999 the Genoa City Community supported a referendum to build a school in the Hunters Ridge subdivision. That school became Brookwood Middle School and our building became Brookwood Elementary School. Currently Brookwood Elementary School educates five grade levels. Students range from 4-year old kindergarten through 3rd grade. We take pride in being a student based school focused on the whole child. As we focus on the more traditional education that can be monitored in the class and with educational testing, we make it a point to also focus on the social emotional development of our students. Students are exposed to individual and group work setting, technology-forward instruction and explorative based project. We continually strive to make education fun for students and keep learning exciting.

The Genoa City Joint 2 School District is a 4K-8 school district that provides students with personalized learning experiences in a small school atmosphere. We believe in the importance of educating the whole child through a balanced program of academics and the arts in a technology-rich learning environment. Our schools are the center of the Village of Genoa City and we have a long tradition of parent involvement and community support.
