Brookwood's Family Reading Challenge: Based on the Read 21 in '21 Challenge started by author and podcaster Gretchen Rubin, we want to challenge all of our Brookwood Families to read 21 minutes each day for 21 days in a row!
Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1.8 million words per year. They will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers. This is compelling data on the benefits of encouraging your child to read.
The BrookwoodReads21 Challenge will begin on February 1st and end on February 21st. Families who sign up here will receive a #BrookwoodReads21 Magnet and optional sheet to track your progress.
Families who complete the challenge will receive a cozy Brookwood Blanket to add some snuggly warmth to their winter reading!

Right before winter break, our 1st graders had fun with "Remembering to be a Reindeer". Remembering to be a Reindeer is a way to help set a positive and mindfulness tone during the holiday season. Each letter in the word REINDEER has a short phrase or quote to remind students, teachers, and parents what the holiday season should be about: helping others, including everyone, showing gratitude and being positive. The students had a great discussions about each of the letters in reindeer, had a blast doing the reindeer pokey, learned facts about reindeer (did you know they can run up to 50 mph?!?) and finished off class with making their own reindeer to take home.
As we start this New Year, "Remembering to be a Reindeer" is a great activity for all to check out; not just our 1st graders. Thinking positively and staying kind are some key traits we all should hold near and dear. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Optimistic thinking is our social/emotional focus for December. The importance of having a sense of optimism and hope for the future helps build up resiliency in our students. Our classroom teachers are helping develop and support the skill of optimistic thinking and are observing things like: Does my student say good things about themselves? Does my student carry themselves with confidence? Does my student say good things about the future? Please help your child practice optimistic thinking at home with these suggestions from the GCJ2 Pupil Services Team.

Recently, in Physical Education class our 4th and 5th graders were fortunate to be taught virtually by college students from Carthage College. These future physical education teachers from Carthage designed lessons especially for our 4th and 5th grade students. We love partnering with groups like this to give our students amazing experiences!

In recognition of Computer Science Education Week, all students at the elementary and middle schools took part in the Hour of Code program. This year’s Hour of Code occurred in over 180 countries, with over 68,000 events taking place! During our event this week, students were able to explore the world of coding, building technology skills and promoting problem-solving. Learning how to move pieces like monkeys, monsters, and Minecraft characters around a virtual area using code was very exciting…some students didn’t want to stop! We are very grateful to have a technology-supportive district where students can build STEAM skills and enjoy learning at the same time.

Right now with all the uncertainty and change in our daily lives, it is completely normal and expected for kids and adults alike to have anxious thoughts. There is no one right way to respond to anxiety/worry/stress, but it is so important to provide an opportunity to allow them to open up about their feelings. Research has shown that are several things that can be done to help combat the feelings of anxiety/worry and it starts with 1) talking about it, 2) making sure others feel heard/safe, and 3) engaging in coping skills. These few little statements are just one way that all three of these things can be accomplished and can help your kids, yourself, and others around you get a sense of control over their anxiety! Try it out!

On December 4th, the students ( virtual and in-person) will go on an adventure to the Zoo with a student named Skyler. After a mysterious encounter with a wise river turtle, Skylar is transformed into a Humboldt penguin, a zebra, and a river otter. Skylar learns that to return to human form, one must “wade with the waddle,” “doze with the dazzle” and “roll with the romp.” With the help of some colorful animals and a caring zookeeper, Skylar learns to overcome a fear of interacting with others. This 40-minute interactive musical meets social-emotional learning standards by exploring the connections between young people, zookeepers, and animals. Teachers will be providing the link to view the assembly on the day of the performance.

In STEAM class at BMS, students are discovering how they can learn about many subjects at once. For this activity, students used markers to create a radial symmetry design on a piece of diffusing paper. The paper was folded and put into water to observe how the water would move through the paper spreading the color from the markers with it. Using a time-lapse video tool, students were able to capture this cool experiment! #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/n1SUy7b-J94

7th graders from Mrs. Tadlock’s science homeroom class continue to connect with virtual students through google meet. First, they learned how to create a split-screen on their Chromebooks. Then they worked on having two tabs open at once. They were also able to talk with their classmates who are learning from home - lots of smiling and waving! Students then were able to review scientific variables and asked questions as they came up. We are excited to partner with this foundation to help raise awareness to all about Childhood Cancer. In reading, Kindergarteners in Ms. Flood's class are learning about sharing their thinking about books. They put a post-it note on a favorite page that made them feel something, that they thought was interesting, that reminded them of something, etc. They then share that page with their reading partner.
While doing this activity, they're also working on finger strength, which will help with their writing. Using playdough and working with post-it notes are a few awesome and fun ways to strengthen their fingers!

Virtual Cross-Country Season Week 2!
Wow! We had such a great turnout for our first week, so many of you were able to find the secret location where Mr. Guth was running! Here is another super-secret location that we hope you'll be able to find! Remember all Brookwood students and their families are invited to participate! Send your week 2 picture to Matt.Guth@gcj2.k12.wi.us
#BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

First graders have been working hard on their addition skills. Students each have a math toolkit that contains math manipulative to help them solve tricky problems. They are also using their other resources while working on math like their math books and iPads. We like to send pictures to our family members to let them know what we are learning. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Students in 7th grade Language Arts took a quiz in a fun and unique way! They answered questions about Characterization via an app called "Quizziz." This fun and interactive website allows the teacher to create assessments for students that helps them to learn literary terms and how to apply them while also challenging them to get the most points and beat their classmates. There are funny memes to encourage them to keep doing their best and even strategy boosters to help them get a better score. Students love this app and the best part is, they are learning at the same time as playing a game! #BrookwoodsBest #BeBrookwood

Hey Mustangs! Our District Wide virtual cross-country season is off to a great start! Remember to find the hidden location, take a picture for week 1 and email it to Mr. Guth or Mrs. Peters! Our week 2 location will be revealed on Monday!
Matt.Guth@gcj2.k12.wi.us
Haley.Peters@gcj2.k12.wi.us

4th and 5th Graders are learning all about the sun, moon, and stars. Students learned about how our shadows change throughout the day because of the earth's rotation. Students traced their water bottle's shadow in the morning and then observed the change in the shadow placement in the afternoon. They also had fun playing shadow tag, shadow shaking hands, and getting creative with their shadows. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Did you know that today is International Dot Day?!
It was established to celebrate creativity, courage, and collaboration, the celebration is easily one of the most fun days of the year. Celebrated by both children and adults, International Dot Day is a day to connect, collaborate, and create. It's also a day to foster self-expression. Way to go to our Brookwood Artist with their dot masterpieces! #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

The phones and internet are out at both buildings as we work through a temporary power issue at the Middle School. We will let you know when this situation is resolved. If you need to contact the schools please email Luke Braden Luke.Braden@gcj2.k12.wi.us at BES or Kellie Bohn Kellie.Bohn@gcj2.k12.wi.us at BMS.

Way to work hard, Mustangs!!
Today was the first day of word study for our 3rd graders. Students learned about the prefix "re-" and had to come up with four words that matched that pattern. Afterwards students took turns book shopping to find a book they love and even were able to virtually share about the books they are reading with some of their virtual classmates.
#BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Thankful that our students have accessibility to various sources of books....our classroom libraries, school libraries, local public library, and various digital resources are used in many ways. A shout out to our super readers in 3rd grade! In these pictures, our 3rd graders are exploring virtual and classroom libraries for reading. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Mustangs! Welcome to our Virtual Cross Country Season!
The first three weeks of our season will be scavenger hunt activities. View the image below to see where Mr. Guth has been running, and then run/walk to the same location. Then email Mr. Guth or Mrs. Peters with a picture proving you found the secret location. Our fourth week will be a virtual race. For those that complete all four challenges, a free t-shirt will be awarded!
Here's the image: https://tinyurl.com/y5ns2b2y
Don't forget that this activity is open to all students 4K-8th Grade! Here are the email addresses you need to submit your picture(s) to:

Way to go Middle School Mustangs!!
Students in 4/5 STEAM were put to the challenge of seeing how strong paper could be. Using triangles they made by folding strips of paper, they constructed a structure that would be strong enough to hold a small object. Other students wanted to see how high they could build their structure. This activity helped us work on our problem-solving skills!
Grades 6-8 art classes were asked "Who are you?" and worked on creating a self-portrait that told the viewer who they are behind the mask. The students' drawings were full of wonderful details and it was great seeing our Mustang artists back in creative action!

Mustang Families,
Make sure your child has something to read...with the library checkout system in place this year....it’s easy!
Your child was sent an email last week called “Library Book Checkout” with a link to a Google form. Please have your children use this to fill out any requests for books they might have, whether they are onsite, blended, or virtual. (They can “star” the email so it is easy to find!)
Virtual students:
Curbside pickup begins this week for your library materials! As long as you placed your hold by noon the day before the scheduled pickup, your materials will be ready for pick up that week.
BMS curbside pickup - Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30 at the middle school main entrance (Call 262-279-1053 upon arrival and let them know you are here for curbside pickup and your child’s name. Your books will be brought out to you.)
BES curbside pickup - Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 at the elementary main entrance (Call 262-279-6496 upon arrival and let them know you are here for curbside pickup and your child’s name. Your books will be brought out to you.)
Virtual students returning books should follow the same process as curbside pickup. Onsite and blended students will have a bin located in their grade level wing/area where they can return books.
We are still trying to round up books that were checked out last school year but not yet returned. Please help us locate these books so other students may check them out!
If you have any questions, please reach out to our library media specialist: Jacki Bolwerk // jacki.bolwerk@gcj2.k12.wi.us
Thank you!

Champions enrollment is now OPEN! Here is a message to you from the Champions Manager:
As you are all making your final decisions regarding your preferences for how your children will attend school this coming school year please know that Champions will also be open for in-person before and after school care. I also wanted to share with you our updated Health and Safety measures we have in place at Champions to ensure the health and safety of your children.
As we welcome students back to our Champions classroom, the way we teach and care for our students will be different. The last several months have been a time of change and uncertainty, and we know that our students will need resilience to recover and thrive. The collective trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, and our students have each been impacted by these changes in different ways.
Resilience skills will be at the heart of our Curriculum because resilience is critical to students’ social, emotional, and academic success. Our first two weeks will focus on Social Emotional Learning and forming relationships; in the following weeks students will participate in two-week focused projects that relate to a different skill that will cultivate resilience. At the end of the focused projects, students will collaborate on a final, group project where they’ll use all the skills they’ve developed to bring their project to life!
It will take time to rebuild our learning community and establish (or re-establish) relationships, get into the rhythm of routines, identify individual needs, and find new ways to learn together. We’ll start with a focus on what’s most important and then add to that over time.
If part of your family’s back to school plan includes needing before and after school care, you can now register for our Fall Programs. With social distancing guidelines that will need to be in place we will have a limited capacity of no more than 20 children within our individual programs. Spaces are limited so don’t wait too long to register. If there are any questions I can answer please feel free to contact me via email or phone.
You can register for our fall programs at www.discoverchampions.com

We are truly thankful for EVERYONE that is a part of our Brookwood family....students, parents, and community members....but we wanted to give a special shout out to our staff! Our district has been holding weekly staff meetings for our staff to talk, collaborate and share questions and ideas....and the amount of staff members that have been able to make it to these live virtual meetings are amazing! We've had attendance hit around 50 staff members every time! We grateful for the technology that we have that also allows us record all of our meetings so that if a staff member isn't able to make it to the live meeting, they have the opportunity to watch the recording and catch up and ask follow up questions as well. Staff....thank you...thank you...thank you....We know this fall will be very different for everyone but the dedication and passion we have on our staff team to keep moving Brookwood forward is amazing. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest #Thankful

The Genoa City Jt. 2 School Board recognized Jan Krueger and Jan Sireno at their regular meeting last night with a Children First Award. The Children First Awards were started in the fall of 2015 to recognize people who were making an extra effort to support children in our school and community. The "Jans" were recognized for their leadership and advocacy to serve food to our students and community during this time of crisis. The care and service to our students that they have demonstrated during this time has been exceptional! We are SO lucky to have them as a part of our District and Brookwood Family.
They would love to see you at this week's Grab and Go pick ups at the middle school Monday-Friday from 11-12.

Thank you to a local community veteran who was a sergeant and served two tours in Iraq (Operation Iraqui Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom) for writing this for our post today:
"Memorial Day is to honor those that never made it out of their uniform. They gave their lives, so we could live ours. Our country will forever be in their debt.
Please don't thank a veteran on this day, that is for Veteran's Day. Instead, take a moment of silence for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice."

Parents, students and staff, we are amazed by how resilient you are. We’ve got this!!
Everyone has spells of feeling down, but depression is more than just spending a few days feeling sad or unhappy. Depression can make you feel persistently sad and down for weeks or months at a time.
While some people believe that depression is trivial or not a genuine health problem, it's actually a real condition that affects around one in 10 people over the course of their lives. It impacts people of all genders and ages – including children.

May is Mental Health Month
Everyone feels sad or low sometimes. These feelings usually pass with a little time. Depression——is a mood disorder where symptoms last for at least two weeks. These affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, social interactions and school/work. Children as young as the age of three can show signs of depression. 1 in 20 children will experience depression before the age of 18. If you have concerns about your child and depression. Please feel free to reach out to one of our school counselors.

There emotions all around us and at times we may not be very good at sharing them with one another. It is important that during this time, we learn about different strategies that may help us share our emotions with one another. Many times, young children may act out or differently from their regular doings because they have some type of emotion they are feeling internally and not know how to share them.
Watch this video and practice with Ms. Amelse to learn about a strategy you can add to your bag about how to share your emotion(s) with a Two Word Check In.

Students in 6th grade science used simple supplies to make transverse wave machines. The 4/5 Character Recognition Breakfast was held on Friday, February 7. This special event recognized students in 4th and 5th grade that showed exceptional character during the first semester, including being kind, helping others, completing assignments, staying organized, and having a positive attitude. Way to Be Brookwood, 4th and 5th graders!! #BrookwoodsBest

During Brookwood Kindness Week, our 3rd grade students loaded busses and headed to help package meals for hungry children in other countries. On this particular day, the meals we prepared were for children in Haiti. We successfully packed 163 boxes equaling 35,208 meals - feeding 97 children for a year! What an amazing experience for our students to be a part of! #BrookwoodsBest

Students at the elementary school spent the week of January 27th celebrating Brookwood Kindness Week. During this week students were involved in a variety of cross curriculum kindness activities, dress up days and service projects. In addition, students who showed acts of kindness received kindness slips that are displayed on our kindness board. This week was the kick off to February, kindness month! During the month of February we are running a Mac Attack (mac and cheese) drive to benefit the Walworth County Pantry. Students are learning about childhood hunger and are so excited about donating mac and cheese to help other children. Also this month students will participate in classroom kindness challenges and continue to earn kindness slips. Outside of school, students are working on their kindness calendar that can be turned in once 20+ acts of kindness have been achieved. #BrookwoodsBest

This year during Brookwood Kindness Week, our 2nd grade students partnered with the Walworth County Food Pantry in putting together the 150 SAM (Senior Assistance Mission) bags to help the seniors living in poverty in Walworth County. The bags include health and safety needs of a senior. 2nd grade students were taught about what a senior citizen is and why their needs are unique. Students also talked about how our the elderly often are faced with loneliness. 2nd and 3rd grade students worked hard to create 150 Valentines Day cards to be placed in each SAM bag. The students learned a lot about putting themselves in the shoes of a senior citizen and said they felt so good when they would complete each bag, knowing it was helping a senior in their community. #BrookwoodsBest

Mr. Siegel loves being able to share his enthusiasm of learning with his students and one resource he uses often with his students are audiobooks.
Audiobooks offer a wide array of benefits! Not only is it a great way for students to access various genres of literature but this resource also allows students to enjoy books that are above their own reading levels that may be difficult for them to read in a traditional read to self setting. He likes using audiobooks with students to teach critical listening skills, model interpretive reading, and to introduce new genres to students that students might not otherwise consider.
Check out some audiobooks for yourself. Many are available for check out from the Genoa City Library www.genoacity.lib.wi.us and there are other free resources online. https://bookriot.com/2016/09/15/11-websites-find-free-audiobooks-online/

Desert and Rainforests are some pretty cool terrestrial environments! At least that is what the 4th and 5th graders in Mrs. Erickson's science class think. Students worked in groups to create a 2D poster of what a desert or a rainforest looks like, including living and nonliving things, climate, and soil or sand. They then presented their posters to the class. They all did an amazing job. Students are creating terrariums, observing them, and then taking them home! #BrookwoodsBest

Students are able to post connections, questions, and comments to the group while reading nightly. They are also able to reply to other posts in order to answer questions and build off of the group's comments. The students are essentially able to manage and run a book club through communication within Edmodo while supporting one another in and out of the classroom with the teacher being zoned into what they are doing and discussing.

After a class discussion, their classroom decided to collect donations for those families. Word spread and some other students pitched in too. In just four days, they collected 143 food items, a crockpot, gift card, diapers, and more! The students were able to walk to UCC to hand deliver all of their donations. It all started with one student's idea and turned into an amazing act of kindness!

Did you know: “Researchers say about 60 percent of us make New Year's resolutions but only about 8 percent are successful in achieving them.” (Economy, 2019)
Instead of setting a New Year’s resolution this year….set an achievable goal with your child and help them feel the joy of completing a task over time and learning goal setting from home.
Examples:
If your child doesn’t ever set the bed in the morning….don’t have them set a goal of setting their bed every morning…set an achievable goal of for the month of January that they will set their bed at least twice a week and keep track of it…if it goes well….in February, change it to three times a week…and celebrate the accomplishment.
If trying or eating healthy foods is a task in your home….set a goal that each week that your family will try at least two new vegetables or fruits with dinner each week. Track your successes and celebrate the accomplishment!
If your child is struggling with academics at school…..pick one subject area where they will stay after school once a week to get additional support. At the middle school, our teachers have after school academic support sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. If your child is at the elementary school, feel free to reach out the their teacher to see what kind of plan you can work on together to have your child be more successful. Overtime, your child will see that taking the extra time to get academic support will help them feel accomplishment in their classes.
If spreading kindness is something you value….have your child value it as well….brainstorm some ideas that show acts of kindness that they can accomplish. Put all your ideas in a jar and once a week pull a slip or two out and do it!
There are so many things you can do to help your child feel success and it all starts at home….don’t pick a New Year’s resolution this year….work with your child on setting achievable goals so they feel accomplishment and success!
HELP share some ideas in the comments below on some achievable goals that can be accomplished from home!!!

BROOKWOOD FOR THE WINNNNNN!!!
Last night, the Brookwood girls basketball team beat a conference powerhouse, Yorkville, 21 to 20 in the first round of the playoffs. Taylor Palazzo made a 3 pointer to get the team started, and Tessa Coari beat the buzzer at the end of the first half with a basket. Lilly Villareal and Natalie Porras led the charge with aggressive defense and offense. Lilly Butinas sealed the victory by making a free throw with seconds remaining in the game. Congrats to ALL our girls on on huge playoff victory!

The past few weeks, 7th grade scientists have been learning about the properties of water. We learned water particles are attracted to one another and resist being separated. We dropped water on pennies, trying to determine how many drops would stack up on a penny. How many drops of water to you think can stay on a penny?
The students are also learning about chemical formulas, and that each substance can be made of different types of atoms in different arrangements. We used marshmallows and toothpicks to build molecules of water, carbon dioxide, fructose (sugar), and caffeine - all ingredients found in soda. We were able to separate the water from the soda, using a process called distillation. The scientific principles of evaporation and condensation were used to explain how the water was removed from the soda. 7th grade science is awesome! #BrookwoodsBest

Miss Flood's class read a book called "The Kindness Quilt" by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. The students in the story decided to perform acts of kindness for others in their home, neighborhood or community. They drew pictures and wrote about their kind acts and made their pictures into a kindness quilt. The students decided to have their own kindness challenge in Room 107. You can see their quilt hanging in their classroom window.
Miss Flood’s class will be letting other classes know about true kindness challenge and challenge them to do the same. They can't wait to see how big their quilt grows!
