For your weekend enjoyment! Our Family Engagement Team is excited to share with our Brookwood Families and our community members a digital read aloud series where our team and staff members will be reading books aloud to you and your families while sharing effective reading strategies and activities for you to engage in at home with not only our books we are sharing with you but also your own personal books, books from our local library, our school libraries, or even books bought from the store. We hope you enjoy this activity and find ways to implement these strategies and games at home with your loved ones. Here is this weekend's reading from Ms. Bolwerk! Not only does she share with you a strategy but also some useful information how you can help your child check out some books from either of our school libraries. https://youtu.be/30L5t9XtUBM Here is a link to a playlist of all of our previous read alouds as well: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlhKsK8VoY0m8XUfhSQInKAKDOMIexVw3

Optimistic thinking is our social/emotional focus for December. The importance of having a sense of optimism and hope for the future helps build up resiliency in our students. Our classroom teachers are helping develop and support the skill of optimistic thinking and are observing things like: Does my student say good things about themselves? Does my student carry themselves with confidence? Does my student say good things about the future? Please help your child practice optimistic thinking at home with these suggestions from the GCJ2 Pupil Services Team. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

In recognition of Computer Science Education Week, all students at the elementary and middle schools took part in the Hour of Code program. This year’s Hour of Code occurred in over 180 countries, with over 68,000 events taking place! During our event this week, students were able to explore the world of coding, building technology skills and promoting problem-solving. Learning how to move pieces like monkeys, monsters, and Minecraft characters around a virtual area using code was very exciting…some students didn’t want to stop! We are very grateful to have a technology-supportive district where students can build STEAM skills and enjoy learning at the same time. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

School Safety is a priority at Genoa City Schools. Throughout the year, we run a number of different drills to ensure our students have the information and strategies to keep safe. These drills include fire drills, school lockdown drills, and severe weather drills. We would like to inform you that today at Brookwood Middle School, we conducted a safety drill. If you or your student have any questions regarding this drill, feel free to contact Mrs. Erickson. Brookwood Elementary School will be conducting an age appropriate safety drill prior to winter break. If you have questions, feel free to contact Mr. Braden. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Inspire kindness and pay it forward! The kindergartners at BES hope that you'll pick up one of their bookmarks that they made! They hope it inspires you to do an act of kindness for someone else. If you pick up a bookmark, let them know how they inspired you. Send an email explaining your act of kindness (and add a photo if you can!). You’ll be a part of our “Kindness is Contagious” display at our school and we can't wait to share with you how people in our own community are helping us spread kindness. We look forward to hearing from you! Email our team at GCJ2KindergartenTeachers@gcj2.k12.wi.us Kindness - it costs nothing, but means EVERYTHING!

Way to go, Mustangs!! The student council food drive was a huge success. We collected 1,351 non-perishable items for our local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes. Thank to you all those that donated at both schools. To celebrate, the middle school student council decided that Brookwood Middle School will be having a PJ Day on Friday, December 4. The top three homerooms will also be celebrating with a movie! In 3rd place with 163 items is Ms. Cottrell's room, in second place is Mr. Dittner's room with 279 items, and our winning homeroom is Ms. Metcalf's with 388 items! Way to Be Brookwood, Mustangs!! #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Right now with all the uncertainty and change in our daily lives, it is completely normal and expected for kids and adults alike to have anxious thoughts. There is no one right way to respond to anxiety/worry/stress, but it is so important to provide an opportunity to allow them to open up about their feelings. Research has shown that are several things that can be done to help combat the feelings of anxiety/worry and it starts with 1) talking about it, 2) making sure others feel heard/safe, and 3) engaging in coping skills. These few little statements are just one way that all three of these things can be accomplished and can help your kids, yourself, and others around you get a sense of control over their anxiety! Try it out! - GCJ2 Pupil Services Team Julia Garczynski - Director of Pupil Services Annie Halterman - School Psychologist April Fitzsimmons - Elementary School Counselor Kayln Orby - Middle School Counselor
