Welcome to the Mustang Family! Catherine (Cat) Milligan - BMS SPED Teacher - Genoa City Joint 2 School District

Cat spent the past 10 years as a middle school SPED teacher at Lakewood, where her sister also works.

Cat lives in Lake Geneva with her husband, Ryan, their
daughter, Isabel, and their shelter rescue mutt, Emmy.
This year brings another big transition, as Isabel starts 4K
at CenDen. Looking for a schedule that better matched her daughter’s school calendar sparked Cat’s career move, and, after following Brookwood on social media, she is excited to officially join the community.

Outside of school, Cat enjoys mystery and suspense books, outdoor walks, fairs, and traveling with her family. They recently returned from their first-ever cruise—Disney!—and enjoyed every minute! They have a trip planned up north near Shell Lake to visit family. Italy, where Cat’s dad’s family has roots, is high on her travel wish list.

Cat and Ryan are both Brewers fans, but football creates
a friendly rivalry at home: Ryan cheers for the Cowboys, while Cat is a Bears fan.

Another great day of learning and collaboration at Brookwood! 💙🐎 A huge thank you to our partners at Bloom360 and Treehouse for spending time with our staff and sharing their expertise. Their “Chaos to Calm” presentation gave our team practical strategies and a deeper understanding of how we can support all students, especially when they are navigating challenging moments. We are incredibly fortunate to have partnerships that allow us to learn from professionals who bring such valuable knowledge and experience to our work. Our staff also held their first staff meetings of the year with Mr. Lubus and Mr. Ringsby, helping us get aligned, connected, and ready for the year ahead. We rounded out the day with professional learning around important technology updates and resources that will support our staff and students this year with Mrs. Xiong. Two days of learning, collaboration, and preparation and now we’re ready to welcome our Brookwood Mustangs! 💙🤍

What a great way to kick off the year at Brookwood! Today, we welcomed our entire staff back for our first professional development day, and the energy, collaboration, and commitment to students were on full display. A huge thank you to CESA 2 and their talented staff led by Kris Statz, Deidra Gorman, and Beth Clarke for the collaboration and planning that went into preparing for today. CESA 2 leaders presented alongside our admin team to our staff around several important areas on how the brains of adolescents develop and learn, creating strong classroom cultures, and effective assessment practices. One of the best parts of the day was watching our staff learn together, challenge their thinking, and immediately begin connecting the work to how we can better serve Brookwood students. We have an incredible team, and today was a great reminder that when adults learn and grow together, our students benefit. Excited for what’s ahead at Brookwood this year!

Session 2 Summer School STEAM class used the world in their space to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. They explored the playground in the forest to discover technology isn't always electronics! They also used random spheres to investigate forces and motion. They observed the best engineering in nature...spider webs. Then tried to make their own web! While forestry sampled random plants in the forest and then collected them to make a hammered piece of artwork. They used twigs to make a frame and finished their pieces.

Session 3 Summer School was truly eventful. Due to the dangerous air quality, we did most of it inside.

The Look at Those Birds group used their bird journals to learn about our state bird (robin) and other birds. They also decorated birdhouses and practiced using binoculars. While forestry watered baby spruce, maple, and swamp white oak trees. The foresters also made a salve from plants in the forest. Students designed their own labels and were excited to try the salve out on their bug bites!

This summer, our Greenthumb gardening classes were very busy. They gardened, weeded, ate tons of raspberries, made raspberry jam, made fairy gardens, harvested lettuce, and made ranch dressing.

During the past four weeks of summer school, students have been working hard on an important project to honor our former BES principal, Luke Braden.

During the "Build-A-Bench" class, students learned hands-on skills to create benches that are now placed at both the Elementary and Middle School.

The benches were built with love and are meant to embody that everyone has a place and everyone is welcome at Brookwood, something Mr. Braden demonstrated every day.

Thank you to Mr. Erickson and Mr. Guth for mentoring students during this special class.

We greatly appreciate Dunn Lumber of Lake Geneva for donating all the building materials for this project. Also, thank you to Jenny Schenider and Balsis Awards for providing the plaque.

When you see the benches, sit with a friend, smile, and talk about how to make it a great day, Mustangs!

One of the highlights of our summer school program was welcoming Snake Discovery for their Reptiles Around the World course today in partnership with the Genoa City Public Library.

Students explored reptiles from around the globe, learned the difference between snakes and legless lizards, met rare species up close, touched geckos, watched a snake eat, and even had the opportunity to hold a large boa constrictor!

These kinds of experiences remind us that learning doesn't just happen from a textbook. When students can see, touch, ask questions, and experience science firsthand, curiosity comes alive.

A huge thank you to Snake Discovery for bringing such an engaging, educational, and memorable course to our students this summer!
