Over the summer Mrs. Kanthack and Ms. Bartucci spent a weekend at  the Educator Leadership Rendezvous at Fort McCoy, joined by educators, Wisconsin Teachers of the Year, Kohl Fellows, DPI, and volunteer Army National Guard recruiters. Their mission? To network in order to understand more about each other’s role in our dedication to serving others and bring back strategies and practices that benefit Brookwood students. Squads were assigned to each participant, led by one National Guard leader and one educator assistant squad leader.  Day 1 started with getting to know our squads. We learned quickly to have efficient communication and to trust in one another as we completed the physical test of the Field Leadership Reaction Course. We got to know each other and trust each other very fast! With some minor bruises, these stations were conquered by each of our squads and we got out of comfort zones as we struggled. No one was allowed to give up or say “ I can’t do this” because the team supported each other. After “dinner chow”, we ended the night with bonding by building our Guidons (team flags) and talking with other educators and soldiers to learn more about them and what they do.  Day 2 started bright and early at 5:30 AM. We started our day with PT training in the morning and then a short run around the base in rank and file. We echoed the sgt. as sang out. After “breakfast chow,”  we were transported to the History Center to learn about the history of Fort McCoy, and we got to race against another team in an escape room activity. From there, we went over to the Helicopter Landing area. Soon, two Black Hawk helicopters landed carrying State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly and Br.General Mitchell. We had a chance to visit with each of them as the helicopter went to refuel before our flight. After a safety briefing, we were told we would fly doors- open! Mrs. Kanthack sat in the” hurricane seat'' for the best views ( and wind) as we flew about 30 minutes over the amazing WI drift-less area. The helicopters tipped to sides for better views, dove down and zoomed upward above the bluffs. It was the ride of a lifetime!  After our MRE lunches, ( the ration food soldiers eat on the fly,) we went to the rappelling tower. We were terrified of this because both of us are afraid of heights. A 55ft tower is pretty high, but the Rappel Master, SFC Hensen, assured us that we would be well prepared and all the safety precautions were taken. We had a safety briefing for this as well and then we practiced on a slanted wall before going up to the five and a half story wall.  Both of us learned about truly getting out of our comfort zones and were reminded of how our students may feel when trying new things or are worried about failing at something. 55ft, straight up with your heels over the edge ready to rappel down, truly mixes emotion, fear, trust and then a sense of accomplishment. Finally, we participated in more strategy problem solving group activities, like archery tag & navigator games. Both were a blast, as well as incorporated math skills and critical thinking.  After each activity, we debriefed and talked about how it applied to our teaching and classroom management. In the evening, we were able to have a great “dinner chow” and socialize with all the squads.  Day 3: Each day began with reveille, ended with taps. We stopped  each time we heard the bugle call and stood at attention facing the sound to show respect to the flag. Sunday, we packed up, swept our bunk & footlocker area, washed up the bathrooms, just like regular recruits are expected to do. After “breakfast chow,” we met again at Tomah High School for our closing ceremony and a couple of brief presentations. The Educator Leadership Rendezvous will be an experience that we will never forget. It was amazing to see and hear what the National Guard does for our Country, learn the history of this significant military fort, build new relationships, and experience being way out of our comfort zones. We have come home with some battle bruises on our legs and arms, but much better educators for the experience.

Mustangs! Please help us welcome our new middle school principal Tori Franz into our Brookwood Family!! We are excited to start sharing with you our new faces to our Brookwood Family. To meet Mrs. Franz in person AND get a FREE book coupon to the Genoa City Library Friends' book sale at the elementary school...head out to the Touch a Truck event on this Saturday from 10-2 at Veteran's Park! Greetings Brookwood Nation! I am Tori Franz, the new principal at Brookwood Middle School! I come to you with 16 years of experience in education, with leadership experience as Principal of Clinton High School and Director of Teaching & Learning at Palmyra-Eagle Area School District. Prior to then, I worked for 13 years teaching Spanish and ESL at various grade levels in the Wauwatosa and New Berlin School Districts. As one might guess, I LOVE education...and that means I love going to school too! I grew up in New Berlin, WI, and attended Eisenhower High School. I then went on to UW-Madison for my undergrad, and earned a BA in Spanish and Political Science. I received my teaching licenses from UW-Milwaukee in Spanish and ESL, and later returned to school, this time at Marian University, for a Masters in Leadership Studies and Curriculum & Instruction. I look forward to pursuing a doctorate in Equity Studies soon, as I am currently researching programs of study! My husband, Cory, and I live in East Troy with our four beautiful kiddos: Madden (5th grade); Maggie (2nd grade); and Mila and Murphy (3K)...yes - they are twins! Our family loves to be outside swimming, camping, hiking, and of course playing baseball and softball! In my spare time I also love to read, and to run our non-profit organization, East Troy Moxie Girls Fastpitch Club. I can honestly say that although I have only been employed at BMS a short while, I already feel like a part of the family! I am looking forward to getting to know all of our families and staffers, and to working with teachers and students especially! Brookwood is small, but mighty! And, it was the family-like atmosphere that attracted me to apply here. I feel honored and privileged to be working in such a wonderful place, and I can’t wait to meet all of you and to get started! Go Mustangs!
