For your weekend enjoyment! Our Family Engagement Team is excited to share with our Brookwood Families and our community members a digital read aloud series where our team and staff members will be reading books aloud to you and your families while sharing effective reading strategies and activities for you to engage in at home with not only our books we are sharing with you but also your own personal books, books from our local library, our school libraries, or even books bought from the store. We hope you enjoy this activity and find ways to implement these strategies and games at home with your loved ones. We hope you enjoy this read aloud from Mrs. Conrardy! We love her special book she has to share with us this weekend because we haven't seen one of these shown yet! For this read aloud, Mrs. Conrardy focuses on rhyming---a critical skill that is focused on in early learning. Milestones are behaviors or skills that we expect to see by a certain age. Screening in early childhood ensures that your child is on track for development that will lead to academic success. If your child isn't meeting milestones on time, they might benefit from early intervention to build their skills. This is from the American Academy of Pediatrics https://www.aap.org/en-us/advocacy-and-policy/aap-health-initiatives/Screening/Pages/Getting-Started.aspx Did you know? 1 in 4 children are at risk for developmental delay. Early intervention is more likely to be successful due to the amount the brain changes in early development. We are excited to offer our FREE Early Childhood Party! Children 18 months-3 years old at BES on April 30th. Our certified staff will be running exciting games and activities that will target specific developmental areas such as: fine motor, gross motor, speech and language, social emotional, and pre-academics. Parents will fill out a screening questionnaire beforehand, then bring join their child while our professionals interact with your child to make sure everything is on track for success! RSVP to Jayme Wisneski at 262-279-6496 or email Jayme.Wisneski@gcj2.k12.wi.us

In 3rd grade guidance, students have been learning about empathy. The unit concluded this week with a STEMpathy activity where students were given Legos or Knex and scenarios of others who have some sort of barrier or difficulty. Students first empathize with the person to gain a better understanding of the barriers the person is facing. Then, they hypothesize how they can remove these barriers - help the person, showing they care. Students are able to put the three parts of empathy into action, 1. How is the person feeling. 2. Why is that person feeling that way? What can I do to help/to show I care? Once the students understand the why of their design, the innovation starts! Teaching students to consider someone’s point of view, needs, and barriers can help them to gain a better understanding not only of the need for design and innovation but also grow their empathy skills. They were asked questions like: What is this person going through? What is it like to be this person? What barriers does this person face that is preventing him from accessing his environment? What can you do to remove these barriers for this person?
