Green Schools Club is an after school club hosted at BES for students in grades 1st-4th. They are helping Brookwood Elementary establish good recycling habits! Every Wednesday, members collect and take out recyclables from all around the building! Their next mission is composting lunch and snack scraps for the community garden. Kristin Freytag, from the Environmental Education Foundation, is donating a barrel composter and the club members are learning as much as they can about good composting. They can't wait to get started! More information: Melissa.Bobula@gcj2.k12.wi.us

6th grade is connecting their geography and science studies to a biologist-led field study at Glacial Park. The field trip will begin at the Lost Valley Visitor Center with a 45 minute indoor lesson on wetland characteristics and their inhabitants. The group will then break into two classes for the 2 hour hike which includes stops at the bog and marsh for hands - on investigations of the two wetlands. The groups will eat lunch on the trail. All students are required to carry their own lunches on the trail. (Backpacks are allowed.) The groups will conclude the field trip indoors with one last activity.

DPI, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, announced six Wisconsin educators named as finalists for a national award distinguishing science and mathematics teachers for their achievement in teaching these subjects, and Genoa City Joint 2 is proud that MaryEllen Kanthack has been recognized in the science category as one of the six! The 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is considered the U.S. Government’s highest honor for science and math teachers. Kanthack teaches sixth grade at BMS and credits her students, community and colleagues for her inspiration and the success of her work. Her submission was based on research regarding how scientific argumentation in the classroom builds collaborative work and raises achievement in understanding science concepts, along with examples of many things she has accomplished for Brookwood, the state, and nationally. Congratulations, Mrs. Kanthack! Way to make us #MustangProud!!

This spring the Environmental Education Foundation awarded Brookwood with a grant for $1000 to be used for the school forest and other environmental education programming. Lucas, Avery, and Nolan (members of the Green Schools Club) were there to accept the check and thank the board members for helping the programs in the district. In addition to the grant, Mrs. Freytag is also donating a compost bin to be used for lunch waste. We are grateful for their continued support and look forward to future experiences.

The student council Spring Fun Night was a hit! Fourth and fifth graders had a blast playing tag games, chasing each other, doing the limbo and even participating in a friendly version of dodge ball. Students could also make sun catchers thanks to PTO, or pine cone bird feeders. The older students enjoyed their own version of fun. The DJ played their favorite songs so they danced the night away! Others enjoyed Giant Jenga and board games with their friends. Student Council is finishing up their pop tab collection this week for the Ronald McDonald House. It’s not too late to fill the jars of your favorite grade level!

The 5K classrooms went buggy last week!! They're learning all about insects, arachnids and myriapods in their reading unit. On Tuesday, April 23rd, the 5K classes walked to our middle school forest and went on a bug hunt. They used child spades, rakes and magnifying glasses to explore. They found ants, worms, bees, butterflies and even a big, huge slug!
