Local Students Participate in District Solo & Ensemble Festival
WAUNAKEE, Wis. (February 10, 2025) – Students from area schools will participate in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo & Ensemble Music Festival hosted at Lake Geneva Middle School on Saturday, March 1, 2025. During the festival, which is free and open to the public, students will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator.
WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival will draw students from a number of area schools, including Badger High School, Brookwood Middle School, Delavan Darien High School, Lake Geneva Middle School, Lakeland School, Phoenix Middle School, Reek School, The Lincoln Academy (HS) and Traver School. Kim May, music director from Lake Geneva Middle School, will be serving as the festival manager.
“WSMA is proud to support music educators as we work together to provide quality music education experiences for students. Our long-standing festival programs encourage well-rounded musicians who develop deeper understanding through performance preparation that culminates in comprehensive feedback from a qualified adjudicator. Opportunities for reflection and consideration of new ideas is invaluable for musical growth,” said WSMA Executive Director Laurie Fellenz.
WSMA music festivals support school music programs as part of a comprehensive education by encouraging the study of quality music literature; motivating students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities; improving students’ understanding of music literature and concepts (performance through understanding) and providing a performance assessment to improve individual and group achievement.

Founded in 1932, Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) is a non-profit service organization with more than 1,000 member public and private schools. Students from member schools are eligible to participate in WSMA programs, such as District and State Music Festivals, Concert Festivals, State Honors Music Project, State Marching Band Championships, WSMA Aca U Camp and Student Composition Project. WSMA is governed by a board of directors made up of superintendents, principals and other officers from all over the state. WSMA believes music is a basic human need and that all children have the right to experience all that music offers them.
Brookwood Elementary School's Forensics is kicking off! This is open to all students in grades 1st-5th. We hope to see you and your child at the informational meeting on February 25th at BES from 3:30-4pm
Yesterday, 4th graders brainstormed kind adjectives to describe each other. Students anonymously wrote a kind adjective on someone else's heart to put on their Valentine's bag for today. They loved to see what their classmates thought of them and they talked about if you think something nice about someone, say it!
This past week Mr.Lubus took students to Science Immersion Day at the campus of UW-Madison. The event featured over 20 nearby districts having students exposed to real science labs and simulations about energy, cheese making, chemistry and stem cells. Students were inspired about the possibilities!

Our 7/8 Band along with the LGMS 8th grade band and the BHS Wind Ensemble met as a combined group at Badger High School for our Area Band Fest. The bands started out playing a prepared piece during a clinic with Mr. Ott. It was a great experience to combine the bands and work on some of the musical aspects together. The Wind Ensemble joined partway through and played one of their band songs for us as well. The day ended by playing through some pep band tunes together. Our 2nd graders are now bug experts! Throughout their last reading unit, they learned all about bugs. They had the opportunity to have a Bug Expert video chat with them and give them lots of cool information about bugs. Throughout the unit, they chose a bug and researched all about them. They used many text features throughout their book that they were learning in class. Students used graphic organizers to write a rough and final draft. They also drew pictures to go along with each of the research questions. Ask our 2nd graders all about their bugs!

Yesterday was such an exciting day! Our 8th graders had the opportunity to tour Badger High School in preparation for next year! They learned about everything Badger offers, both academically and extracurricularly. There is something for everyone! Students left feeling excited for their next step & prepared with some ideas on the classes they plan to take. Please ask your child to share how their experience went!

Brookwood Middle School invites you to our Empty Bowls fundraiser on Wednesday, February 19th, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. This special event is a community effort to raise awareness of hunger and support those in need.
For just $5 per person, guests can enjoy a simple meal of soup, bread, and dessert donated by community members and staff. All proceeds will go toward Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, helping provide meals for those facing food insecurity.
Join us for an evening of food, community, and compassion. Together, we can make a difference—one bowl at a time!
