7th grade students engaged in an activity today that corresponded with their ELA novel Stand Tall by Joan Bauer. The novel follows Tree, a middle schooler navigating changes in his family and finding his place in the world, with the help of his grandfather and friends.

To deepen their understanding of characterization, students played a version of “Heads-Up” using the characters from the story. This activity helped them practice identifying static and dynamic characters— those who stay the same versus those who grow and change.

It was a fun and meaningful way to connect with the novel while building critical reading skills.

BMS Garden Club is busy picking produce for our local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes. They have also been learning about raspberries, culinary herbs, and the many ways they can be used. They've been picking the zinnias and snapdragons to create beautiful bouquets for the middle school.

BMS Garden Club meets on Wednesdays from 2:50-3:30 for Grades 4-8 in room 201. If you would like your child to participate, simply email Mrs. Kanthack at maryellen.kanthack@gcj2.k12.wi.us to let her know.

Students will need to be picked up at 3:30. We will be meeting each week through October 15th.

We appreciate all the hard work local community members have volunteered to do all summer so we can enjoy and share produce from our garden in the fall!

On Friday, September 5, 2025, Brookwood Middle School came together as a whole school community for our first CharacterStrong Assembly of the year!
Our focus this month is on the character trait of Respect—showing care for ourselves, others, and the world around us. Respect can look like listening attentively, treating others the way we want to be treated, valuing different opinions, and taking care of shared spaces. Practicing respect helps students build stronger relationships, foster a positive school environment, and develop lifelong skills that will serve them at school, home, and in the community.
As part of our character recognition program, every student received a Respect Card. When staff members observe respectful behavior, they will sign and date a student’s card. At the end of the month, students will turn in their cards. Cards with at least three staff signatures will be entered into a prize drawing at the next CharacterStrong Assembly.
We also kicked off the year with our fun “Mustang Round-Up” activities and relays, including:

🐎 Riding a “mustang” (pool noodle horse) through an obstacle course
🤠 Lassoing teammates with hula hoops
🏇 Racing around barrels with our pony
📚 Testing our Brookwood Trivia and Knowledge

In addition, we celebrated our talented student artists, whose drawings were selected for the 2025–2026 Academic Planner!!

We are so proud of our students and look forward to an amazing year ahead!

Third graders have been having a blast in their first week back at school, completing different STEM activities! Students worked on their teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creativity during these challenges. They made paper chains (the longest was 37 feet!), marshmallow spaghetti towers, marble runs, and book towers with paper.
