Brookwood Families!!
Are you ready to POP into October?

As a service project throughout October, Mrs. Collins’s BMS advisory is collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Please keep those pop tabs, and send them to either school -- all month long! BMS students may drop them off in the band room at BMS or they can also be dropped off to the BES office.

Let’s PULL TOGETHER for Ronald McDonald House!

On October 16th, the 5th and 6th graders will travel to the College of Lake County to attend a live musical performance titled Katie: The Strongest of the Strong. This powerful opera for young audiences is inspired by the true story of Katie Sandwina, a circus strongwoman who – beyond earning the title “the strongest woman in the world," and being a wife and mother – also helped to lead the women’s suffrage movement in the early 1900s.

This 45-minute operetta is sung in English. We will have discussions and complete activities while learning about singing/vocal ranges, instruments, storyline, and being a good audience member, among other aspects of the performance, in music classes.

Last week in the BMS forestry elective, students relined and cleared the new path in the north section of the school forest. This path was created by last year’s students and connects the middle school end to the Tom Holden Trail. By clearing the path of new growth and dead plants, it makes the path more accessible to people of the community. Please come and enjoy the school forest and watch for the changes throughout the year!

Yesterday, BMS celebrated students who modeled our first character trait of the year: Respect 🙌 from our Purposeful People/Character Strong curriculum. Each Be Brookwood Student of the Month received our brand-new, limited edition t-shirt 🐎💙—a special way to honor their leadership and example. To kick off October, we introduced our next focus: Responsibility. Students (and staff!) jumped into interactive games that showed what responsibility looks like in action—fun, teamwork, and lots of Mustang spirit! 💪 We’re proud of our students for Growing into Greatness every day at Brookwood Middle School.

Today, the Genoa City Joint 2 School District came together to raise awareness for childhood cancer through their annual gold walk — as September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The elementary school students buddied up with the middle school students and did various get-to-know-you activities. Then they gathered to do their gold walk around the middle school. It was a beautiful day to spend time with one another, as a district, and raise awareness for childhood cancer. Thank you to the Genoa City Police Department for joining us and taking some pictures with their drone and the Brookwood PTO for leading our water stations. All funds donated will be given to Kisses From Friends to continue to support our local families affected by childhood cancer.

This week at BMS Garden Club, members took time to really enjoy the garden. Zinnias, raspberries, and herbs are abundant. They picked tomatillos and learned about Salsa Verde in alignment with Ms. Mohr's Spanish class' salsa making project. Each got a recipe, and some students chose to take some home and try to make salsa verde. Others chose to take eggplant and tomatoes to cook at home. All the produce in the garden is utilized for community members who volunteered in the summer, Brookwood Greenthumbs, and Garden Club members, as well as our local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes.

7th grade students engaged in an activity today that corresponded with their ELA novel Stand Tall by Joan Bauer. The novel follows Tree, a middle schooler navigating changes in his family and finding his place in the world, with the help of his grandfather and friends.

To deepen their understanding of characterization, students played a version of “Heads-Up” using the characters from the story. This activity helped them practice identifying static and dynamic characters— those who stay the same versus those who grow and change.

It was a fun and meaningful way to connect with the novel while building critical reading skills.
